About Us
Established in 2011. We are a small dedicated group interested in the preservation of our local history and folklore. We meet under the shadow of Shandon in COFFA House, Church St., and have taken part in many exhibitions and given many talks of historical interest over the years.
We were privileged to have taken part in the centenary celebrations in 2016 with our month long exhibition in St. Peter’s Church, North Main St., and in having brought recognition to the unsung Cork heroes of the War of Independence in Ireland.
The title of this exhibition was ‘Ordinary Women in Extraordinary Times’. It told the story of 11 Cork women who never made it into the history books but who never the less put their lives in jeopardy during this period of change in our country.
In this exhibition we brought just a small sample of the stories of these brave women to your attention and our hope is to continue gathering the fascinating accounts of what these women and others endured. We are currently proposing to put into print the account of these Cork women, which will bring their sacrifices to a wider general audience.
In 2017 we were delighted to be shortlisted for the Voluntary Community Award by Cork City Council.
Our aim is the preservation of local and national history. Not just the ‘big’ headlines, but the untold stories of ordinary people who made a difference. To this aim we are delighted when the public contact us, whether it is looking for information or telling us the story of a loved one. There is a story to be told in every family and it is a shame for the story to be lost for the want of a telling!
Shandon 300
In 2022 we were invited to participate in the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the official opening of St Anne's Church, Shandon. We were delighted to be included in the celebrations and determined to make our own contribution to the event. As we are first and foremost a history group it was inevitable that our contribution would have a history flavour, and so our contribution to the celebrations consisted of 11 colourful panels depicting the history of Shandon. The Panels have some beautiful photos which drew a lot of comment from those who visited the church. The panels are still on display in the church today.
Community Spirit Award - April 2023
2023 brought us exiciting news, as we were selected as winners of the Cork International Hotel 'Community Spirit Award for April.
This award recognizes an outstanding contribution or special achievement made to the community by a group or individual and is sponsered by Gerald McCarthy Giftware and the Carrigdhoun Newspaper. We were delighted to receive a beautiful plaque whice was presented to our chairman, Denis Wilson, by a repesentative of the Cork International Hotel, Edel Kavanagh.
