Shandon Area History Group members Dominic O’Callaghan, Maeve Higgins, Anne Twomey and Denis Wilson with Minister Michael McGrath at last nights Community Spirits Awards for the overall winner. We did not win, the worthy winners were Cork City Hospital Club. Everyone had a very enjoyable night with beautiful food and drink thanks to the Cork International Hotel.

The Dublin author and historian Liz Gillis and Anne Twomey of the Shandon Area History Group taking questions after their talks at the 2023 Mother Jones Festival in Dance Firkin Crane Centre. Liz spoke about Women in the Irish Revolution and Anne talked about the Conlon Sisters and Margaret Buckley, all local Cork women. Margaret Buckley was the first president of a political party in Ireland being elected president of Sinn Féin in December 1937, a position she held until 1950.

Anne Twomey who received an award from the Lord Mayor Councillor John Sheehan. The award was given in recognition of her commitment to local history through her role with The Shandon Area History Group and her contribution to The North Presentation Secondary School adult education and community service. Cathal MacSwiney Brugha (Grand nephew of Mary MacSwiney) being presented with a copy of Ordinary Women in Extraordinary Times by members of Shandon Area History Group when they attended The Terence MacSwiney Weekend in Kilmurry Co Cork . The book is the story of 11 Cork women in the Revolutionary Years 1916 - 1923. Mary MacSwiney was one of the women featured in the book.

Liam P. O’Riordan giving his talk and power point presentation in COFFA House, Church Street, Cork. It was The Shandon Area History Group last talk for 2019 on 11th December. Liam’s talk was on Edward Bransfield a Corkman from Ballinacurra, Midleton who is reputed to be the first man to see Antarctica in 1820.
